Just Making Out is the story of adolescent lovers, a high school boy facing adult responsibilities, and a dead high school football player…all following the dreams of their hearts and just making out...

Dane and Tim are in love. Dane’s parents and Tim’s older brother do their best to keep them apart, but the teenaged lovers are determined they’ll find a way to be together. Just when life gets better for the pair, Dane’s old nemesis, Boothe, appears in town with an insane warning about a ghost. The warning turns out not to be so crazy when Jacob, a dead high school football player, haunts Dane. The situation becomes more complex as the ghost slowly becomes more human and expresses an intimate interest in Dane. Tim is at first hurt by the growing relationship between Jacob and Dane, then frightened for his boyfriend’s very life. Can he save Dane from the ghost hunk or will he uncover Jacob’s dark secret too late?

Shawn has finally gained the attention of his dream boy, but making Tristan his boyfriend is another matter entirely. To complicate matters, Shawn is responsible for his younger brother. Can he make a relationship with Tristan work while he’s juggling high school, two-part time jobs, and his new parental responsibilities?

Since I discovered Mark A. Roeder, I couldn't stop reading his books (eight in a few months). In his Verona, Indiana, chronicles, the author presents the lives of many gay teenagers, in the 1980s and 2000s. "Just Making Out" is one of the longest productions of Roeder (428 pages), but this novel followed me everywhere I went, and I "devoured" it in a few days. The young heroes live in the '80s and somehow "talk" to someone of my generation because I knew the society and the time depicted in "Just Making Out." Shawn and his brother Tim leave the home of a violent and homophobic father to rent an apartment and be masters of their own destinies. Both want to meet Mister Right. Their friend, Dane, leaves the oppressive high school of a neighboring city to relocate in Verona with his supportive fathers. The family buys Verona's old high School, their new home. Dane falls in love with Tim, but is haunted by a very possessive but dishonest gay ghost of the old high school... Some scenes are very hot.
Of all Roeder's books I read, "Just Making Out" is my preferred one. If you want to read a gay thesis novel, follow the story of the wrestler Ethan in "Someone Is Watching", and you will know how the man takes the right decisions at the right time (and is rewarded with the love of his life). If you want to read a well written masterpiece of gay literature that, with Roeder, entered a more mature stage, read "Someone Is Killing the Gay Boys of Verona." But if you want to read a book about people like you that gives you hope and a sentiment of appreciation of life, pick "Just Making Out." The supernatural events developed in the second half of the novel add an interesting dimension to the novel's universe.

Just Making Out edition by Mark Roeder Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

After reading just one of Mark Roeder's books on Gay Life I have now read about 10+ and enjoyed them all! Highly reccomended. Once I start reading they are hard to put down! As a fellow gay teen athlete I love to read his stories.
I'm addicted to all of Mark Roeder's books. His writing is fantastic, and once I pick up any of his books I can't stop reading them. I'm only getting 5 hours of sleep per night because of it. I've now spent hundreds of dollars just to get the next book in his stories... I can't get enough. This was surprisingly a great book.
This book I had to give three stars as an average. The first half (roughly) was really great as I got to continue reading about the characters I had really come to care about. Then, for some odd reason, the book, to me, totally derails when it starts bringing in a ghost. It detracted from the story and I really did not enjoy that aspect. I wanted to know about the main characters, not how they interacted with a ghost.
SPOILER ALERT. A necessary read if you are following the series. I loved the perspective change as seen through the eyes of Shawn and Tim and the introduction of Tristan even though he seemed a bit two dimensional in the novel. Dane's supernatural encounter seemed too implausible for me to enjoy. In previous books these matters were related as a bit of an extrasensory perception and much more believable but here, midway through it almost seemed like the author was changing genres. The fact that he and his two parents would buy and move into an old school seemed a bit absurd as well. I kept anticipating all this to be explained as a dream sequence or possibly the result of a delusion due to Dane's previous traumatic incidents but no, it was presented as fictional fact which I failed to appreciate, to be honest. It's still a good solid read and I highly recommend it!
